Ahmedabad:The race to appoint a new vice-chancellor at Gujarat University, the state’s largest public university, has intensified as more than 100 applicants enter the fray. The selection process is currently under way, drawing significant interest from senior academicians across the state.

According to sources, the process began after the three-year tenure of the university’s first woman vice-chancellor, Neerja Gupta, ended on June 30. Following this, the state govt appointed Jagdish Joshi as the in charge vice-chancellor. He is now considered one of the strongest contenders for the permanent position.

The state govt initiated the selection process after some delay and constituted a three-member search panel. After its formation, applications, and biodata were invited from eligible candidates. With over 100 applications received, the committee is expected to take time to scrutinise and shortlist candidates.

So far, the search committee has held one meeting and is expected to convene again in the coming days. After detailed scrutiny, the committee will recommend three names to the govt, which will then make the final appointment.
