Mother Critical; Driver, Helper Absconding
A speeding trailer smashed into a road divider and ran over five members of a family on Ajmer-Jaipur National Highway near Kamla Nehru Nagar.
Jaipur: A speeding multi-axle trailer truck smashed into a divider and ran over five members of a family waiting for a ride in Jaipur Tuesday morning, killing a 40-year-old man and his three young sons and leaving his wife critically injured.The accident occurred around 8.46am near Highway King Hotel on the Ajmer-Jaipur National Highway near the 200-Feet Bypass.Shyam Nagar police identified the deceased as Chandra Prakash (40) and his sons Ramesh (11), Gopal (10) and Deepak (8), all residents of Jaitpura village in Rajsamand district. Prakash’s wife, Kailashi (35), suffered multiple fractures in both legs and is undergoing treatment at the SMS Hospital Trauma Centre.Jaipur police commissioner Sachin Mittal said initial investigations into the cause of the incident point to overspeeding.“The five people were standing on the road divider when the truck came flying down a nearby flyover, veered off its path and smashed into them,” he said.The impact threw all five victims into a nearby drain. The three boys died on the spot, while Chandraprakash succumbed to his injuries during treatment. Police said the collision was so severe that the children’s bodies were left mutilated.Investigators are still examining clues at the scene of the accident to establish the exact sequence of events.According to police, the family, which lived in rented accommodations in Vaishali Nagar, earned a living by making and selling brooms on the city’s footpaths.The five people were waiting for a bus to return to their native village, and eyewitnesses said they were trying to wave down the trailer at the time of the incident.Local residents said the family often travelled in trailers and trucks to save on transport costs.The truck driver and his helper fled the scene after the crash. Shyam Nagar police, assisted by local residents, pulled the victims from the drain, while a crane was pressed into service to remove the damaged truck from the road.Police said the vehicle was travelling from Delhi to Ajmer, carrying plaster of Paris. Records showed it had five pending traffic challans, they added.The vehicle has been seized and a search is on for the absconding driver and helper.
