New Delhi: The Haryana government on Monday apprised the Supreme Court that it has decided not to grant sanction to prosecute Ashoka University faculty member Ali Khan Mahmudabad over his alleged objectionable Facebook post made last year on Operation Sindoor.

The counsel for the Haryana government informed a division bench headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant that the state has decided to show magnanimity as a one-time gesture. The bench was informed that a decision to not take criminal action against Mahmudabad was taken on March 3.

“As a one-time magnanimity, the sanction is refused. The chapter is closed,” the counsel for Haryana government informed the bench. He added that the professor may be warned so that “he may not indulge in such acts in future”.
The bench proceeded to add a word of caution for Mahmudabad to be more careful in future. “Sometimes writing in between the lines creates more problems. Sometimes the situation is so sensitive that we all have to be careful…,” the Bench remarked.
