Gorakhpur: Amid continuous rainfall and forecasts of heavy showers over the next few days, divisional commissioner Indra Vikram Singh, along with mayor Manglesh Srivastava and DIG Gorakhpur Range, conducted a surprise inspection of low-lying areas vulnerable to waterlogging in the city on Saturday.Municipal commissioner Ajay Jain and other civic officials accompanied the team. The inspection began at Sumer Sagar drain, where local residents told officials that regular desilting by the municipal corporation had helped prevent water accumulation and maintain smooth flow. The team also inspected the area beneath Dharamshala Bridge, where no waterlogging was found.At Rapti Complex in Asuran, officials said water was being diverted into drains using pumps installed by the municipal corporation, preventing accumulation.During the inspection of the Daudpur Canal Road tri-junction, no rainwater stagnation was observed. Engineers, however, pointed out that an elevated culvert in the area causes backflow, restricting the natural drainage of water from the drain near Aryan Hospital and requiring pumping into the culvert.No waterlogging was reported around Champa Devi Park or other locations inspected by the team. Officials said normal life in the city remained unaffected despite the rainfall.The divisional commissioner directed officials of the municipal corporation and Jal Kal department to remain on alert for the next three to four days in view of the possibility of heavy rain. He instructed them to keep suction machines ready for immediate deployment in low-lying areas. He also directed officials to ensure that the municipal corporation’s helpline number, 8810709390, remains operational round the clock to assist residents.
