Bhubaneswar: Odisha Police have been conferred the prestigious President’s Police Colour, the highest honour awarded to a military unit and police force in recognition of exceptional service, professionalism and achievements.The honour has come at a symbolic moment, coinciding with the state’s celebration of its 90th police foundation day on Utkal Divas (Odisha statehood or formation day) on Wednesday.An official communication from the ministry of home affairs (MHA) stated: “The Hon’ble President of India is pleased to approve the proposal for the award of President of India’s Police Colour to Odisha Police.”Director-general of police Y B Khurania described the honour as a proud moment for the state. “This award is a testament to the dedication and hard work of the Odisha Police. It is a matter of pride for the people of Odisha,” said Khurania, on the sidelines of the police formation day function where he felicitated several personnel and highlighted the evolution of the state police along with its achievements since 1936.Explaining the criteria and significance, ADG (headquarters) Prateek Mohanty said, “The President’s Colour is the highest recognition for a police or military unit, awarded for exceptional service in maintaining law and order, crime prevention, professionalism, bravery, discipline, achievements and milestones.”As per protocol, Odisha Police had submitted detailed documentation months in advance to the MHA, showcasing its record in citizen-friendly policing, technology adoption, training initiatives, crime prevention and anti-Maoist operations among others. “We fulfilled all these criteria,” Mohanty said.The award itself resembles a ceremonial flag, bearing a unique insignia that reflects Odisha’s culture and the ethos of its police force. “Though it looks like a flag, it is not a flag. A special ceremony will be held soon where we will receive the award. The design and logo of the award will be unveiled the same day,” Mohanty said.
