Thiruvananthapuram: Sending and receiving plants from nurseries has become easier and more reliable as India Post has started a service to send live plants by post in the state.The pioneering project called Green Express received such a good response that the postal department earned Rs 5.5 lakh revenue from the venture last month when it was started.An official said that the facility, which is more or less like a parcel service, is being used by nurseries in Thiruvananthapuram, Kozhikode and Wayanad to send plants to people based on orders.Plants will be delivered in 24 to 48 hours across the state. People who book the service can track the deliveries.“It is aimed at supporting the agriculture and horticultural sector and is being done on a pilot basis. The initiative provides quick and cost-effective logistics to commercial nurseries, independent plant sellers, online e-commerce flora platforms and retail customers seeking a safe, swift and highly dependable mechanism for shipping live plants.”Shipments under this banner receive high-priority status at every transit point within the postal chain, including sorting centres, transit hubs and until their final delivery point, he added.This unique system offers to fill a gap in logistics in moving plants without damaging them.“More and more people are opting for it as promotions are being done among horticulturists.”Now, India Post delivers the plants at the doorstep. They may turn it into a door-to-door facility in the future.
