RANCHI: Sujit Sinha, one of Jharkhand’s most notorious gangsters, was allegedly killed in a police encounter in Jamtara district late on Sunday while being shifted from Sahibganj jail to Dhanbad, police said on Monday.Sinha was being transported under heavy security when the police vehicle developed a tyre puncture. While he was being moved to another vehicle, he allegedly snatched a service rifle from a constable and attempted to fire at the police team, a police officer said. The police retaliated, leading to Sinha’s death, the officer added.Jamtara SP Shambhu Singh told local reporters that further investigation into the incident was underway.Sinha was among the most wanted criminals in Jharkhand and had a long criminal record, including cases related to murder, extortion, firing incidents, Arms Act violations and organised crime. His criminal network reportedly extended across Dhanbad, Bokaro, Ramgarh, Ranchi and several neighbouring districts.Sources said intelligence inputs over a prolonged period suggested that Sinha was continuing to operate his gang from prison. The decision to shift him from Sahibganj Jail to Dhanbad was taken on security and administrative grounds as part of efforts to curb his alleged influence over criminal activities.
