New Delhi: Delhi Police detained a 51-year-old drug trafficker, identified as Dharamveer Singh, under the Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (PITNDPS) Act. The crime branch recently prepared a proposal for his preventive detention and forwarded it to PITNDPS division of ministry of finance.Special CP (crime) HGS Dhaliwal said that considering Dharamveer Singh’s active and repeated involvement in drug trafficking, the detaining authority issued an order based on the proposal submitted by Delhi Police.Singh was apprehended from Fateh Nagar in west Delhi and was detained in accordance with the order. He is being shifted to central jail in Puzhal (Chennai), under the provisions of the PITNDPS Act, in a bid to disrupt the narcotics supply chain.Singh was involved in nine criminal cases, police said. He became involved in illegal activities after his wedding in 1994 and started supplying ganja in Delhi. To conceal his activities, he set up a cable operator business in Inderpuri. He was arrested by the narcotics cell in 2006.In 2016, he was arrested in two separate cases involving the recovery of commercial quantities of ganja. Police said he subsequently emerged as a major drug trafficker in Delhi, with ganja being smuggled from south India to the capital.In 2022, Singh and his accomplices attacked a Delhi Police narcotics team that had gone to Inderpuri to arrest him. Police said the team had reached the area to apprehend Singh, also known as Palla, a wanted drug smuggler, but he was not present at his residence. During the operation, two people sustained bullet injuries and four police personnel were injured after a mob pelted stones at the police team.
