Begusarai: Police on Tuesday were still trying to identify the criminals involved in the shooting of Under-19 national-level volleyball player Govind Kumar (20) in Begusarai. Bike-borne criminals had shot at Kumar on G D College Road in Mirganj under Begusarai town police station area on Monday afternoon.Begusarai SP Manish said family members of the victim had not mentioned any names in the FIR lodged in connection with the incident. “Police are investigating the case to identify the culprits as well as arrest them,” he said.Kumar was first admitted to a private nursing home in Begusarai but was later shifted to the state capital for better treatment after doctors attending him here found his condition critical.A member of the state volleyball team in the Under-19 category during three consecutive national games in 2022, 2023 and 2024, Kumar has been regarded as a promising young player at the national level. Family members said he was also the captain of the state volleyball team which won the bronze medal at the Khelo India Youth Games 2025 held in the state.Meanwhile, CCTV footage of the incident went viral on social media platforms on Tuesday. The video shows three bike-borne criminals overtaking Kumar’s motorcycle. The person sitting on the pillion seat, his face covered with a scarf, fires at him as their motorcycle comes close. Kumar then collapses on the road along with his motorcycle, while the other two criminals, wearing helmets, speed away after committing the crime.A shop owner near the spot said people initially mistook the incident for an accident. “I first took the sound of gunshots as the usual popping sound of bikes that some bikers specially install in their bike these days. However, Govind said that he had been shot at. As he was wearing a backpack we could not spot the injury,” he said.Kumar lived in a rented accommodation in the Ratanpur locality of the town but is a permanent resident of Manjhaul village in the district.
