Ahmedabad: The National Medical Commission (NMC) has announced a reduction of 250 medical college seats across various institutions in Gujarat, as part of a nationwide cut of over 6,000 seats affecting approximately 750 colleges. This move follows the recent comprehensive inspections carried out across states.Swaminarayan Institute of Medical Science and Research, Kalol, lost all its medical seats due to extensive non-compliance and major irregularities discovered during recent probes. Furthermore, Amreli Medical College’s seats were reduced from 200 to 150 and Dr Kiran C Patel Medical College and Research Institute, Surat, lost 50 seats, bringing its total to 150 from an initial 200, a senior state health department official said.Gujarat’s total medical seats, previously at 6,900, now stand reduced by 250. The NMC cited common deficiencies, including a shortage of faculty, inadequate infrastructure, presentation of false information and insufficient hospital facilities. Despite repeated warnings, these institutions had failed to rectify persistent shortcomings.
