Patna: The National Medical Commission (NMC) has granted permission for 50 MBBS seats each at Shri Ram Janaki Medical College and Hospital, Samastipur, and Government Medical College, Chhapra, Saran, from the 2026-27 academic session.The approval has been conveyed through Letters of Permission (LoP) issued by the Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB) of the NMC to both institutions. The move is expected to create more opportunities for students seeking medical education in Bihar while strengthening the state’s pool of trained doctors in the coming years.According to the health department communique, the introduction of MBBS courses at the two medical colleges will provide students from Samastipur, Saran and neighbouring areas greater access to medical education closer to home. The affiliated hospitals are also expected to benefit through expansion of specialised healthcare services, modern treatment facilities and overall medical capacity.Health minister Nishant Kumar expressed gratitude to the Centre for accepting the Bihar govt’s request and described the approval as an important milestone for the state. He said the expansion of medical colleges would have an impact beyond medical education by improving the availability of doctors and strengthening healthcare delivery.He said there would be no shortage of faculty or other necessary resources required for academic operations at the two institutions. He added that the govt’s objective was to develop a healthcare system in which people could access quality and specialised treatment within their own regions, reducing the need to travel to distant cities for medical care.
