Guwahati: The prime accused in Gauhati University student Nimisha Thakuria’s death sustained two bullet injuries in police firing on Tuesday when he allegedly attempted to escape from custody, police said.Ashiq Ali (26) was taken to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) around 5.30 am on Tuesday after receiving initial treatment at Garal Public Health Centre.Azara ACP Nilotpal Saikia said Ali was taken to the crime scene near Dharapur for investigation; from there, he tried to escape.GMCH medical superintendent Devajit Choudhury said, “There are two bullet injuries, both with entry and exit wounds, meaning the bullets passed through and through. One of the injuries is near the ankle joint and has caused a slight impact to the femur. The other is near the knee joint.”Choudhury said the major blood vessels and nerves in Ali’s right leg were intact.“Doctors have applied plaster casts to his right leg and admitted him to the hospital’s orthopaedics ward, where he is currently receiving treatment and being monitored to prevent any post-injury infection,” he added.Ali’s condition was stable, and he was out of danger, though he remained under observation, Choudhury said.A resident of Garigaon, Ali is accused in the death of Nimisha, a Dharapur resident. Police began investigating the case after the two visited a homestay last month. Ali has been charged with murder, gang rape and other offences under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, police said.
