Cuttack: National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has registered a complaint over the deaths of 13 Odia migrant workers in the ammonia gas leak at a seafood processing factory in Tamil Nadu‘s Tiruvallur district, with an activist alleging serious safety lapses, seeking interim ex gratia of Rs 25 lakh for the families of each deceased.The complaint, filed by Jeypore-based human rights activist and advocate Anup Kumar Patro, was registered on Friday. In his petition, Patro urged the NHRC to direct the Tamil Nadu govt and factory management to pay an interim ex gratia of Rs 25 lakh to the next of kin of each deceased worker and bear the entire medical expenses of those injured and hospitalised. He also sought directions to the Tamil Nadu chief secretary and director general of police to submit a comprehensive action taken report, along with the findings of the ongoing joint committee inquiry into the incident.”The factory management ignored earlier inspection observations made by the directorate of industrial safety and health,” the complainant alleged.
