New Delhi: Taking suo moto cognisance of a media report in 2024 highlighting the emergence of new waste mountains in Singhola and Bawana, NGT has directed MCD to disclose the quantity of waste accumulated at the Singhola site.During the Aug 5 hearing, MCD told NGT that an integrated municipal solid waste processing facility and engineered sanitary landfill have been developed at the Narela-Bawana site on 34.2 acres out of a 100-acre plot. Delhi Pollution Control Committee has granted consent to operate for the facility till June 15, 2029.MCD’s junior engineer informed the tribunal that no untreated waste is lying at the Narela-Bawana site and that only refuse derived fuel (RDF) has accumulated there. Out of 34,313 MT of RDF, 9,654.5 MT has been disposed of till this March.On the Singhola site, MCD informed the tribunal that it had resumed depositing silt there in July 2025 due to the urgency of pre-monsoon desilting operations. It said tenders were initially invited for establishing a facility for daily processing and disposal of incoming silt to prevent fresh mounds from forming, but were recalled following queries from bidders. Revised tenders were subsequently floated. MCD told NGT that for setting up the processing facility at Singhola, the work has already been awarded and the process will start from Nov.The bench headed by NGT chairperson Justice Prakash Shrivastava and expert member Afroz Ahmad observed that the waste or RDF, which is lying accumulated at Singhola site, has not been disclosed in MCD’s report. “MCD will disclose the quantity of waste lying at the Singhola site in the next affidavit,” said the bench. The matter will be next heard on Oct 14.
