Prayagraj: Mushrooms may soon find a place on dressing tables, with a team of scientists developing an organic face pack using mushroom powder. The innovation, aimed at providing a natural alternative to cosmetic products, has been granted a patent by the govt of India (number: 596269) and is likely to hit the market soon. The research was carried out by a team led by an assistant professor in the department of zoology at Chaudhary Mahadev Prasad (CMP) Degree College, Prayagraj, Hemlata Pant. The two-year research project resulted in the development of a face pack using mushroom powder. The researchers are currently in talks with various companies for commercial production and marketing of the product. The innovation is being seen as a significant development in the field of herbal and natural cosmetics. Researchers said the face pack is designed not only to improve skin radiance but also to support its natural protection and repair processes. The formulation is based on several bioactive compounds naturally present in mushrooms, including beta-glucan, ergothioneine, phenolic compounds, polysaccharides, B-complex vitamins and various minerals. “These components provide antioxidant protection to the skin and help reduce damage caused by free radicals,” says Pant. The study found that the mushroom-based formulation can help retain skin moisture, reduce inflammation and support the skin’s natural repair process. It may also promote collagen production, which can contribute to healthier, softer and more radiant-looking skin.Pant said the product has been developed around a completely natural and environment-friendly concept. The formulation uses components considered biologically safe and is designed to have minimal environmental impact. She said the innovation could give a new direction to the herbal cosmetics industry while encouraging the development of sustainable cosmetic products. With the patent secured and discussions with companies underway, the mushroom-based face pack could soon move from the laboratory to the market, offering consumers a plant-based alternative for skincare.= = = =
