Kanpur: A murder and robbery accused was shot in both legs and arrested after an encounter in Devasadh village under the Saadh police station area in Kanpur early Monday.Around midnight last Friday, armed robbers had barged into the house of Mumtaz (30) in Devasadh village and brutally murdered him in front of his wife, Shahjahan, and their four-month-old daughter. The miscreants, who escaped with a bike and jewellery, also seriously injured his wife.Police said that around 3:15 am, Saadh police were checking suspicious vehicles and persons near the Dargahi Lal canal bridge. During the checking, a bike rider was seen approaching from Saadh town and was signalled to stop. According to police, the rider tried to flee by turning the bike around but lost control and fell on the road while taking the turn at high speed.Police said that after finding himself surrounded, the accused opened fire at the police team with the intention of killing them, prompting retaliatory firing. The accused suffered one bullet injury in each leg and was subsequently apprehended. After a search and questioning, police identified him as Ashish alias Kashi.The injured accused was taken into police custody to Bhitargaon CHC. After primary treatment, doctors referred him to the district hospital, where he was undergoing treatment in police custody.Ghatampur ACP Krishnakant said the search was on for the other accused involved in the incident. Several police teams were conducting raids at possible hideouts to arrest them.
