Mumbai: The patrolling team of the Yellow Gate police station, ASI Suresh Bhalerao, ASI Prashant Borse, and PC Nilesh Malusare, found a distressed turtle while patrolling in the territorial waters of the Arabian Sea. The large loggerhead sea turtle, weighing over 100 kg was struggling to swim and float on the surface.The police officials rescued the turtle and brought it on land in their patrolling boat, and further contacted RAWW (Resqink Association for Wildlife Welfare) for further treatment and rehabilitation.Arun Kadam and Mahesh Ithape from RAWW soon reached the spot and took the turtle to Dr Rina Dev for treatment, in coordination with the Mangrove Cell of the state forest department.The turtle was examined, treated and stabilized. On further instructions of the Mangrove Cell, the loggerhead sea turtle is being shifted to the Sea Turtle Transit Treatment Center in Dahanu managed by WCAWA (Wildlife Conservation and Animal Welfare Association) led by team of Forest Officials and RAWW for its further treatment and rehabilitation as there is no such facility in Mumbai for sea turtles.“The quick thinking and action of the patrolling cops of Yellow Gate police, to rescue this rare loggerhead sea turtle, has helped save a marine life,” said Pawan Sharma, founder of RAWW and honorary wildlife warden of state forest department.
