Police said she confessed to killing the child, adding that financial distress may have been the reason

Gurgaon: A woman was arrested for allegedly killing her nearly one-year-old daughter and dumping her body in a drain in Faridabad’s Palla area. The woman works at a cloth factory in Faridabad, while her husband is a welder. Originally from Madhubani in Bihar, the couple have four sons and have been living in the city for the past 10 years. Police said she confessed to killing the child, adding that financial distress may have been the reason. The case came to light around 2.30 pm on Thursday when two schoolgoing children passing along a makeshift path over the drain spotted the child’s body stuck in an iron net near Budhiya Nala, between Dheeraj Nagar and Titu Colony Part-2. They alerted locals, who gathered at the spot and informed police.A team from Palla police station reached the spot, following which the body was retrieved from the edge of the drain and sent to the Civil Hospital mortuary for autopsy.Initially, police could not establish the identity of the child and suspected that the body may have drifted from another location through the drain before getting stuck in the net. However, preliminary information revealed that the child’s mother had dumped the body in the drain.“The crime branch DLF team, using technical and human intelligence, traced and apprehended the child’s mother,” an official said.Investigators indicated that financial distress appears to be the primary motive, though other angles are also being examined. The accused will be produced before a court on Monday. Police said further interrogation is likely to focus on reconstructing the sequence of events and verifying if anyone else was involved in the crime.
