Gurgaon: A key 2.5-km road in Sector 21, earlier proposed for an upgrade into a “model road”, remains in shambles, forcing commuters to navigate potholes, broken surfaces and dust pollution.The stretch runs from the Sector 21-22-Shalapur tri-junction to the Bijwasan border, also linking the Sector 21 market to Old Gurgaon Road. Despite being a key link to Delhi, several portions of the road are riddled with potholes.Residents said the redevelopment proposal was under planning for the last three years. “Multiple plans from a simple resurfacing to a model road were discussed over the past few years but never executed,” said Prakash Lamba, RWA president of Sector 21.About six months ago, MCG hired a consultant to prepare a DPR for the project, and the report was submitted three months ago, but the project did not move forward.The delay is especially concerning given the volume of traffic the road carries. Poor maintenance and dust pollution have only worsened the condition. Residents complained that loose soil and debris are rarely cleared, and there’s hardly any sweeping. “It is a public health issue. At least three proposals have been floated for upgrading this stretch, each raising expectations but ultimately getting stalled. While the MLA is pressing for the redevelopment, it is yet to translate into visible action,” said KL Sharma, RWA general secretary.Meanwhile, an MCG official said, “This is being planned for redevelopment as a model road. It is a 24-metre-wide stretch, and we have already reviewed the initial design. However, some modifications were required, particularly the addition of a central verge and adjustments as per site requirements, so the proposal has been sent back to the consultant for revision. We expect the revised design to be submitted within the next week. Once it is finalised and approved, we will proceed with the tender. The aim is to develop it into a well-designed road with proper footpaths, a dedicated cycle track, and improved street lighting. We are also planning to include underground utility ducts to reduce repeated digging.”
