Mangaluru: The first fully electric, air-conditioned, zero-emission private city bus was launched on Thursday.Dilraj Alva, former president, Dakshina Kannada District Bus Owners Association, said that Charge Mobility Private Limited, a group of private bus operators, will introduce more electric buses to make the coastal city free from carbon emissions in the days to come.
He said that Charge Mobility will participate in all pan-India tenders to supply electric buses. The first electric city bus in the private sector will commence services on route 27, originating from Mangaladevi Temple, from Friday, he said.“Private bus operators in the undivided Dakshina Kannada region, who served people for the past 100 years, adopted several changes, offering better services. We introduced a cashless travel facility, and the private transporters adhered to the fuel norms of the govt,” he said.Arathi K Parigi, managing director, Neuton Auto, a start-up registered under the Make In India initiative, said that the new electric bus is a made-in-India vehicle with global standards. “We received responses from bus operators and entrepreneurs inquiring about the bus. The nine-metre bus, while offering superior ride quality, ensures zero-emission. The bus, with 34 seating capacity, can be operated in smaller streets as it has a very good turning radius. The bus has a kneel-down facility that allows the vehicle to lower its front suspension, reducing the height of the entry step so that senior citizens may board and alight easily,” Arathi said.
