Varanasi: In a major step towards cleaner urban management and improved solid waste handling, Varanasi Municipal Corporation is developing a modern, scientific waste transfer station at Faridpur. Once operational, the facility will enable scientific, environment-friendly disposal, segregation and movement of municipal waste generated across the city.Municipal commissioner Himanshu Nagpal inspected the under-construction transfer station on Sunday and reviewed the progress of ongoing work. During the visit, he examined preparations at the site, including construction of the boundary wall and shed and assessed the pace and quality of the project.Nagpal directed the executing agency and departmental engineers to ensure all construction is completed within the stipulated timeline without compromising on quality. He issued strict instructions that a completion report for every stage of construction must be submitted. To ensure durability and structural safety, he also ordered that strength reports for each stage be obtained from a structural engineer and placed on record.The facility is expected to strengthen Varanasi’s sanitation system by preventing open dumping of waste in nearby areas and reducing foul smell and pollution. Under the planned system, waste collected door to door will be brought to the station, compacted, segregated where required and then transported to scientific disposal or processing plants.The project forms part of the city’s wider ongoing cleanliness improvement drive. Additional municipal commissioner Durgesh Mishra, representatives of the executing agency and officials concerned from the VMC were present during the inspection.
