Prayagraj: An assistant professor of Motilal Nehru National Institute of Technology (MNNIT), Prayagraj, was arrested on Monday for allegedly raping a BTech student at his residence on the pretext of providing academic assistance, police said on Tuesday.The institute administration conducted a preliminary inquiry and suspended the assistant professor with immediate effect.The survivor lodged a complaint at Shivkuti police station, alleging that an assistant professor had summoned her to his residence to assist her with studies and allegedly raped her. Acting on the complaint, Shivkuti police lodged an FIR under relevant sections of the BNS and arrested the accused.DCP (City) Maneesh Shandilya told TOI that the accused has been sent to jail. He added, “The student mentioned that her mother and sister had visited the city last week and spoken to the teacher about academic assistance. Later, the family was also invited to dinner by him, and he began calling her to his residence for study-related matters.”When the family members left the city on Aug 6, the accused reportedly called the girl to his residence on Aug 9 and allegedly raped her.A medical examination of the student is being conducted, and a thorough investigation is underway, the DCP said.
