Silchar: NFR restored the landslide-hit Jamira-Bairabi stretch on Saturday, reviving Mizoram’s rail link with the rest of the country after 10 days.A Silchar-Sairang passenger train was the first service to cross the restored stretch at around 5.30 pm after a successful trial run, NFR chief public relations officer Kapinjal Kishore Sharma said.“The route was restored on a war footing. Trains between Silchar and Sairang as well as Silchar and Bairabi have now resumed operations,” Silchar station superintendent Bikramjit Nath said.According to an NFR statement, a locomotive with one coach crossed the stretch at 4.30 pm to verify its fitness for train movement. Regular services on Katakhal-Bairabi section will resume in phases from Sunday, while other trains connecting Sairang with the rest of the country are also expected to restart.Train movement was suspended after heavy rain triggered soil erosion near the track on Sept 3. About 70 metres of track was affected, with erosion extending up to 40 metres from the track centre.NFR said engineers, field personnel, heavy machinery and essential materials were mobilised despite adverse weather, unstable ground and difficult road access. Teams worked round the clock to stabilise the area and rebuild the damaged formation.The disruption led to train cancellations, short terminations and short originations, forcing many passengers to travel by road. NFR advised passengers to check timings and stoppages on IRCTC and its social media platforms before travelling.
