Lucknow: Medical libraries at govt healthcare institutions play a crucial role in improving health literacy, combating medical misinformation and promoting evidence-based patient care, a study by researchers from Lucknow University’s Department of Library and Information Science has found.
The study was conducted across three govt medical institutions in Lucknow — King George’s Medical University (KGMU), Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS) and Dr Ram Manohar Lohia Institute of Medical Sciences (RMLIMS).
Researchers surveyed 375 participants, including MBBS students, postgraduate medical students, doctors, faculty members and research scholars, to assess the role of medical libraries in healthcare institutions.
“The findings showed that digital information resources, e-journals, health literacy programmes and information services offered by medical libraries significantly improved access to reliable medical information,” said LU spokesperson Mukul Srivastava.
He said a majority of respondents reported that library services helped them distinguish authentic medical information from misinformation, make informed clinical decisions and deliver better-quality patient care.
The research, conducted by associate professor Anjali Gulati and senior research fellow Harman Iftekhar, has been published in the internationally reputed Scopus-indexed Journal of Electronic Resources in Medical Libraries, published by Routledge, Taylor & Francis Group. The paper was published online on July 19, 2026.
