Mysuru: The Mysuru city corporation (MCC) submitted a fresh proposal to the state govt seeking an allocation of Rs 10 crore for the construction of an international-level swimming pool at Freedom Fighters’ Park in Subbarayanakere on Narayana Shastry Road.MCC, plans to construct the new swimming pool where a pool was located in the 1970s but was closed later, and urged chief minister Siddaramaiah to announce the funds in his budget.
A large number of swimmers utilised the Bahusar Swimming Pool in the 1970s-1980s. It was set up by MCC and maintained by a private agency. Suggesting that the private agency failed to maintain the pool, the civic body decided to close the pool. There has been increasing demand from swimmers in the city to reconstruct the pool in Freedom Fighters’ Park, which has led MCC to initiate the construction work of the swimming pool, two years ago. But the project was shelved due to a paucity of funds.Currently, Mysuru has three state-run swimming pools, including the pool at the University of Mysore, MCC’s swimming pool at Puttaraj Gavai Stadium, and the DYES facility at Chamundi Vihar Stadium. The state-run pools are under pressure as the number of swimmers increase during summer, and all the three pools are currently running eight to nine batches daily, between 9am and 5pm.To reduce the pressure on these swimming pools, MCC revived the project at Freedom Fighters’ Park. Speaking to TOI, MCC commissioner Sheikh Tanveer Asif said that the MCC submitted a fresh proposal to the state to sanction Rs 10 crore for the construction of an international-level swimming pool in Freedom Fighters’ Park and sought funds announcement at the upcoming budget.
