Mangaluru: Days after TOI highlighted the worsening pedestrian woes around the KSRTC bus stand, the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) has stepped up its drive against illegal footpath encroachments, beginning with warning banners and promising strict enforcement across the city.TOI had recently reported how the junction near the KSRTC bus stand has turned into one of Mangaluru’s most chaotic traffic hotspots, with commuters struggling to navigate roads, due to broken footpaths, haphazard parking, roadside vendors and an unscientific junction design.Acting on the issue, MCC has begun erecting warning banners at locations where footpaths have been illegally occupied, cautioning encroachers that eviction drives will soon be launched.MCC health officer Dr Manjayya Shetty said the civic body has issued a stern warning to vendors who have encroached upon public walkways near the KSRTC bus stand and in front of the Mescom office at Bejai.“The city corporation has displayed notice banners informing vendors that eviction operations will soon be carried out against those who have illegally occupied footpaths and are obstructing the smooth and safe movement of pedestrians. Similar banners will be put up at all locations where footpath encroachments are reported,” he said.According to Dr Shetty, the banners are intended as the final warning before enforcement begins.“In the next phase, the corporation will intensify eviction drives to clear illegal encroachments. Those who fail to voluntarily vacate the occupied areas will face action as per the law,” he said.
