Chandigarh: Soon, markets in the city may have an aesthetic based on uniformity and creativity, at least as far as lighting is concerned. To bring uniformity to the appearance and illumination of markets, the municipal corporation has introduced a first-of-its-kind policy laying down design specifications, market rates and a policy framework for the installation of decorative poles and light fixtures in commercial areas.The policy aims to ensure a common design for poles, lights, fixtures and related equipment across markets, giving them a similar visual identity. Officials said the framework was prepared after assessing the ground realities of different markets and finalising technical specifications for poles, fixtures and installation locations.Under the approved policy, decorative poles up to 3.5 metres in height can be adopted at a base rate of up to Rs 12,500 per pole, excluding GST. Adoption cost of standard decorative light fixtures of 90 watts has been fixed at up to Rs 14,500 per unit, excluding GST. The rates were finalised after technical and physical verification of specifications and are subject to the lighting requirements of individual locations.The MC has also decided that the approved rates may be reviewed after one year.The policy will apply to market areas where footpaths are at least 8 feet wide. For places with narrower footpaths, authorities have provided an alternative arrangement. In such areas, an additional bracket may be installed at a lower height of 3 to 4 metres on existing light poles to ensure adequate illumination without affecting pedestrian movement.Officials said the criteria were framed keeping safety considerations as well as the physical characteristics of market areas in mind. The standardisation is also expected to improve the overall aesthetic appeal of commercial hubs while ensuring proper lighting levels.The proposal received approval during the MC’s monthly general house meeting last week. Following the approval, officials have been directed to consult local municipal councillors before implementing the policy on the ground. Councillors will be able to share feedback, identify location-specific requirements and suggest improvements to facilitate smoother implementation.During discussion on the proposal, several councillors urged the administration to begin work at the earliest and complete installations ahead of Diwali. They maintained that improved decorative lighting would enhance the appearance of markets during the festive season and benefit both traders and visitors.Box: Committee framed policy after detailed reviewThe MC had constituted a special committee comprising technical officers and staff to formulate the policy. The committee held several meetings to deliberate on design specifications, market rates and the implementation framework for decorative poles and light fixtures.After evaluating various technical parameters and market requirements, the panel finalised specifications for decorative poles, lighting fixtures and suitable market locations. Its recommendations formed the basis of the policy approved by the general house.
