Nagpur: A group of bikers allegedly riding at high speeds and using modified silencers has become a daily nuisance for residents and pedestrians along the Orange City Street stretch, with locals particularly concerned about the safety of senior citizens who use the road for evening walks.Locals, speaking to TOI, said a group of around five to seven youngsters, mostly riding high-horsepower sports and cruiser motorcycles, makes repeated rounds of the stretch between around 7pm and 9pm. The riders allegedly use modified or illegal silencers that produce sudden, explosion-like sounds, startling pedestrians and residents in the vicinity.According to locals, the issue is not limited to noise. The bikers are also allegedly seen riding at high speeds, raising concerns about the safety of pedestrians and other road users. Senior citizens who regularly walk along the stretch in the evening said the sudden bursts of loud noise are particularly distressing.“It is scary when these motorcycles suddenly pass by with blast-like sounds. Senior citizens come out for their evening walks around this time, and such speeding can put them at risk,” a resident, Dinanath Pendharkar, said.Residents have also pointed to a similar problem on the road connecting Rana Pratap Nagar to Somalwar High School, near the Pratap Nagar police outpost. “The bikers drive at such speeds that we can’t even click pictures of their number plates,” said a senior citizen.“The use of such modified exhaust systems and silencers that create excessive noise are punishable offences and a clear violation of traffic norms,” said Vipin Dave, a local. He added that the traffic cops must increase patrolling and set up more checkpoints on the route to deter such miscreants.Traffic police sources assured TOI that patrolling will be increased in the area to identify and nab the miscreants.
