Nagpur: In the wake of the stray bull attack that left a 64-year-old senior citizen critically injured a month ago, mayor Neeta Thakre pulled up the civic administration while directing immediate and uncompromising action to curb the growing menace of free-roaming cattle on roads. She asked the civic administration to remove all stray bulls from streets to prevent repeat of such incidents.Chairing an emergency review meeting on Thursday, Thakre sought a point-blank account of the performance of the Nagpur Municipal Corporation’s veterinary department. The mayor ordered NMC’s veterinary officer, Dr Gajendra Mahalle, to immediately launch a comprehensive census of stray bulls within city limits. “We need exact figures — how many animals are on the streets, which areas are most vulnerable, and how many citizens suffered due to accidents or attacks,” she said, making it clear that vague estimates would not be accepted.

Thakre sought to know how often irresponsible cattle owners were penalized and whether the existing enforcement mechanism acted as a deterrent. She directed the department to impose hefty fines on cattle owners who allow their animals to roam freely. She emphasised that repeat violations must invite stricter penalties and possible legal action. The mayor also instructed that all seized stray bulls be shifted to the Nandgram cattle shed without delay to keep them off busy roads and residential areas. Construction of a centralised cattle shed is in the final stage, and once completed, the facility will free the city roads from the stray cattle menace. She reviewed the availability of vehicles and manpower for capturing cattle and asked whether additional resources were required to intensify operations.Thakre further ordered the identification of accident-prone zones and deployment of focused drives in those areas. Coordination with the traffic police, real-time monitoring, and a sustained crackdown were emphasised as essential steps to prevent further tragedies. She also instructed the department to work proactively to resolve the stray dog issue.
