Bathinda: Manjit Singh Brar, secretary, Punjab medical education and research, has been handed over the officiating charge as vice-chancellor of Baba Farid University of Health Sciences (BFUHS) in addition to his present duty upon the completion of the term of Dr Rajeev Sood as the VC. As per a notification issued by Punjab governor ‘s secretariat, the officiating charge has been given till the appointment of a regular incumbent.
Dr Rajeev Sood was appointed the vice-chancellor of BFUHS on June 7, 2023, for a term of three years. His term completed in June 2026. Recently, the university was in news after a doctor was suspended for dumping a dead body at the gate of a crematorium situated close to Guru Gobind Singh medical college hospital, a constituent college of BFUHS. Before the body was dumped in the crematorium, the patient was admitted in the medical college hospital.
Lately, the university was mired in another controversy when 28 candidates were held for using Bluetooth- enabled gadgets in an examination for the posts of pharmacy officers. Even as the university and the state govt made claims that it was a case of cheating with a gang involved in it,which charged Rs 3.5 to Rs 13 lakh from candidates, the functionaries from opposition political parties are claiming it was a case of paper leak.
The university also faced a vigilance inquiry in the past over complaints of certain irregularities in certain purchases and appointments.
