Vadodara: More than 92% of police personnel deployed on election duty and registered as voters in Manjalpur constituency, exercised their franchise through postal ballots on Saturday. Bypoll for Manjalpur assembly seat is scheduled on July 30.A total of 152 of the 165 eligible police personnel had cast their votes at a Suvidha Centre set up at Police Training Centre at Police Headquarters in Pratapnagar.Under the Election Commission’s guidelines, personnel deployed on election duty are eligible to vote through postal ballots. The police personnel assigned election duty for the Manjalpur bypoll had submitted Form 12 to the returning officer seeking permission to vote through the postal ballot facility.

Following scrutiny of the applications, the election authorities established the Suvidha Centre to facilitate voting by eligible personnel.The bypoll was necessitated following the death of eight-time BJP MLA and former Gujarat minister Yogesh Patel on June 2. BJP has fielded Satish Patel, while the Congress has nominated Bhikha Rabari, in what is expected to be a direct contest between the two parties. The counting of votes is scheduled for Aug 3.
