The MLA briefed the Chief Minister on issues relating to road connectivity, electricity and banking services, and sought his intervention for addressing the difficulties faced by the people.
Regarding road connectivity, the delegation sought the upgradation of the Jiribam–Tipaimukh road, presently a district road, to National Highway status. They highlighted that the road would provide an important link between NH-37 and NH-102, thereby improving connectivity between Jiribam, Tipaimukh and adjoining areas.
The delegation also raised issues concerning power connectivity in the area. Among the demands was the proposed power-line connection from Sipuikaun Power Station to Parbung. They also highlighted the need for extending power supply to other areas through the proposed power-line connections.
The delegation further apprised the Chief Minister of the need for establishment of a bank in the area, highlighting the difficulties faced by the people due to the absence of banking facilities.
The delegation also raised matters concerning the Pherzawl Autonomous District Council (ADC) and conveyed the concerns and aspirations of the people regarding its establishment.Responding to the delegation, the Chief Minister said that peace should come first, emphasising that restoration of peace and stability is essential for taking forward development and administrative processes. He assured the delegation that the issues raised by them would be looked into and necessary action taken.
It may be noted that the peace initiative involving representatives of the Meitei and Hmar communities, held in Jiribam district in April in the presence of Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh, has contributed to maintaining peace and harmony between the two communities, who have continued to live together peacefully since then.
Singh said that the life and ideals of Jana Neta Hijam Irawat continue to hold deep relevance for Manipur, and called upon government employees, civil society organisations and students to carry forward the spirit of sacrifice, service and social responsibility exemplified by the legendary leader.
Speaking at the State-level observance of Jana Neta Hijam Irawat Day, 2026, held at Irawat Square, Lilashing Khongnangkhong, Thangmeiband, Imphal, the Chief Minister said that Hijam Irawat was one of the most prominent figures in the history of Manipur who dedicated his life to bringing about social and political change in the State.
The Chief Minister recalled that Irawat was a multifaceted personality who made significant contributions not only to social and political movements but also to literature and journalism. He said that Irawat’s contribution to creating social awareness through his writings and journalistic activities remains an important part of his legacy. In 1922, he published Meitei Chanu, a journal, to spread awareness about Manipuri society and its issues.
Highlighting Irawat’s personal sacrifices, Khemchand said that despite his marriage into the royal family and the privileges and position associated with it, Irawat chose to give up those privileges and dedicate himself to the cause of the people. He said that Irawat travelled to different places, mobilised people and worked for political and social change rather than pursuing personal comfort or position.
The Chief Minister also recalled Irawat’s vision of harmony and peaceful coexistence among the 36 communities of Manipur living across hills and valley of the State. He said that Irawat’s ideals of unity, social justice and collective progress should continue to guide the people of Manipur.
