Noida: A man was arrested on Tuesday for allegedly strangling a cricket ground worker to death earlier this month. The accused allegedly attacked the victim after the two got into an argument during a drinking session.Govind Sharma, a carpenter from Roza Jalalpur, frequently visited RCG Cricket Ground to watch matches, where he became acquainted with Jasveer Maurya, who worked at the ground and lived on the premises. Maurya was responsible for cleaning, maintenance and cutting grass at the stadium.The two became friends and would occasionally drink alcohol in Maurya’s room at the cricket ground together. On Aug 1, during one of these drinking sessions, an argument broke out between the two. Sharma told cops Maurya was verbally abusing him and he punched Maurya in retaliation. Sharma confessed to then pinning Maurya to the ground and strangling him to death. He then fled the scene in a panic.Cops found Sharma’s slipper, two beer bottles, two pouches of country-made liquor, two empty snack packets and two plastic glasses around the crime scene. Cops used local intelligence and electronic surveillance to trace Sharma, and he was arrested from Roza Yakubpur on Monday.An FIR has been registered against him under BNS Section 103(1) (murder) at Bisrakh police station. Further legal proceedings are underway, police added.
