COIMBATORE: A 22-year-old guest worker from Odisha allegedly slit his girlfriend’s throat at Tirupur railway station on Monday. The accused, identified as Rakash Maji, 22, works at a private firm in Karur. Police said he had been in a relationship with a 22-year-old woman from Odisha for the past five years. The woman was working in a garments company in Tirupur district. Police said the woman had recently been avoiding Rakash. He came to Tirupur and asked her to marry him. She refused and told him she was in love with another man. He suggested that they go to Odisha for the wedding. Rakash allegedly forced her to go with him to the railway station. At the ticket counter, the woman tried to run away, leading to an argument. During the altercation, Rakash allegedly took a blade from his bag and slit her throat.Passengers alerted the railway police, who reached the spot and rescued her. She was taken to Tirupur Medical College Hospital for treatment. Rakash was arrested and remanded in judicial custody.
