Mysuru: A city court has sentenced a man and his relative to one year’s imprisonment for subjecting his wife to cruelty in a case where she allegedly died by suicide in 2020.According to public prosecutor AN Madhu, the V additional district and sessions court judge, Roopa KN, sentenced Jalendra of Angatahalli and his relative Lakshmamma to one year in jail and imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 each. In default of payment, the convicts will have to undergo an additional three months of imprisonment.In a release, the public prosecutor stated that Hema, a resident of Kalaboochanahalli village under the jurisdiction of Hunsur Rural police station, married Jalendra nine years ago. The couple had three children.Along with Jalendra, Lakshmamma, Ramegowda and Veena lived in the same house. As Veena was married but had no children, Jalendra, Lakshmamma and Ramegowda allegedly subjected Hema to mental and physical harassment, pressuring her to give one of her two sons to Veena.The release said Veena also pressured Hema, stating that nothing would happen if she gave her a child, and the family allegedly asked her to leave the house if she did not comply. About a year prior to the incident, a community meeting was held at Hema’s native village, Kalaboochanahalli, where Jalendra’s family was advised not to trouble her or demand her child. However, the harassment continued.In June 2020, Hema allegedly consumed specific tablets at her home in Angatahalli village. She was admitted to Hunsur Government Hospital and later shifted to KR Hospital in Mysuru, where she died on June 15, 2020.Based on an investigation by the then inspector, Shivaprakash, a chargesheet was filed against the accused, the public prosecutor stated.
