Pune: A 23-year-old man allegedly bludgeoned his female friend’s partner to death and critically injured her at a PG in Hinjewadi. He was nabbed in a joint operation by Pimpri Chinchwad police and Pune Rural police on Thursday at Urali Kanchan on the Pune-Solapur highway.Police have identified the deceased as Sagar Gaikwad (22). “The woman (21) is undergoing treatment at a hospital. Her condition is critical,” said senior inspector Balaji Pandhare of the Hinjewadi police. The accused, Dinesh Zambare of Solapur, has been charged under sections 103 (murder) and 109 (attempt to murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).Pandhare said the woman and Zambare hail from Solapur district and were in a relationship. She shifted to Pune for studies and later developed a relationship with Gaikwad, who worked as a manager at a PG building in Marunji, Hinjewadi. “The accused learnt about their relationship and was monitoring them. He worked as a car driver in Solapur, and reached Hinjewadi on Thursday afternoon. He found the woman living with Gaikwad in the PG building and allegedly bludgeoned both of them with an iron rod before fleeing the spot. Both of them were taken to a hospital, where Gaikwad was pronounced dead.”Police obtained the registration number of the accused’s car from CCTV footage and then obtained the cell phone number linked to the vehicle’s registration and the accused’s address. “Zambare had switched off his cellphone in Pune Camp. As the car was registered in Solapur, I alerted the Urali Kanchan police and told them to lay a trap on the highway. As soon as he reached, they nabbed him and handed him over to us,” Pandhare added.
