Kanpur: Police arrested Abrar Ahmad, a resident of Tiwaripur, for allegedly defrauding Praveen Kumar of Rs 2.38 lakh by promising him a job in Russia at a salary of Rs 70,000 per month. The victim also alleged that he was held hostage and tortured in Mumbai.Praveen Kumar of Tiwaripur stated that in 2024, he met Abrar who claimed to be an overseas placement expert. He lured Praveen with the promise of getting him a job in Russia at Rs 70,000 per month.Abrar demanded Rs 2.38 lakh from him in the name of providing an offer letter and getting a notary agreement at the court. Praveen said that he gave Abrar a cheque of Rs 50,000 and the remaining amount in instalments.In 2025, Abrar took him to Mumbai on the pretext of arranging a visa. He alleged that Abrar and his two associates held him hostage in a room and made him spend Rs 1 lakh, and when he ran out of money, they beat him up. He managed to escape.Praveen alleged that when he demanded his money back, he was threatened with death after which he filed a complaint with the police.Jajmau station in-charge Sanjay Pandey said that the accused was arrested in Motinagar. After being produced in court, he was sent to jail.
