T’puram: A 39-year-old woman and her 13-year-old daughter were evicted from their house by her husband and in-laws, who were demanding more dowry, at Pulinkudi on Sunday night. On the woman’s complaint, Vizhinjam police registered a case on Tuesday and began a probe. The woman alleged that the accused threatened to pour acid on her face if she didn’t bring in more dowry and also threatened to burn her alive using petrol. The accused beat up the woman and the daughter was also evicted for supporting her mother and pleading not to torture her further. The woman was allegedly held tightly by her hair and her head was hit against the wall. She was kicked down and beaten brutally all over her body. The woman said that her family had given gold and money as dowry at the time of marriage but she was tortured physically and mentally for more, with her in-laws’ approval. Locals alerted police after they noticed the woman and daughter on the road at midnight.After providing medical care, police recorded their statements. A case was registered under sections of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita: 85 for cruelty against women in domestic relationships, 115 (2) for voluntarily causing hurt using a weapon, 296 (b) for abusing and 351 (2) for criminal intimidation. Section 75 of Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act-2015 was also added. “A search been initiated for the absconding accused,” said police. TNN
