Considered a close aide of Mamata Banerjee, Mitra announced his resignation from all national and state committees of the TMC aligned with the former West Bengal chief minister. He also stepped down as the party’s chief whip with immediate effect.

Despite crossing over to the rival camp, Mitra insisted his allegiance to the party remained intact. “I have only changed my room, not my house. I am very much in the TMC,” the Kamarhati MLA told reporters after meeting Ritabrata Banerjee.
The move marks the latest setback for the Mamata Banerjee faction, which has been battling an escalating internal revolt in recent months. The power struggle intensified after Ritabrata Banerjee and his supporters claimed control of the party headquarters and unveiled a parallel organisational structure, deepening the split within the Trinamool Congress.
The development is seen as a boost for the rebel faction as it seeks to consolidate support ahead of upcoming political contests, especially the Kolkata Municipal Corporation elections, while posing fresh challenges for the Mamata Banerjee-led TMC.
