Nagpur: Police commissioner Vishwas Nangre Patil has directed all police station in-charges and crime branch unit heads to prepare a list of cops with corruption taint and discipline issues like liquor and substance abuse. The move is part of his ‘carrot and stick’ policy that combines strict action against erring officers with generous rewards for constables who go beyond the call of duty. The lists will be submitted to the commissioner for review, after which errant personnel will be kept under surveillance and given a chance to reform or face disciplinary proceedings.“The directive aims to weed out negative elements that affect the image and efficiency of Nagpur Police. Officers with repeated complaints of alcohol dependency, substance abuse, habitual absenteeism, controversial conduct, poor performance, and involvement in social ills will be on the list,” said an official.Commissioner Patil has made it clear that while genuine efforts to improve will be supported, persistent defaulters won’t be spared. This internal accountability drive is expected to strengthen discipline across all police stations in the city. At the same time, the commissioner is equally focused on recognising and rewarding good work.In a recent example of his carrot approach, a head constable from Ambazari police station was awarded Rs 10,000 for rushing an injured murder victim to hospital even though he was on leave.Such gestures, Nangre Patil believes, motivate the force and set high standards of service. The balanced policy ensures that while indiscipline is dealt with firmly, exemplary dedication receives prompt appreciation and encouragement.Senior officers say the exercise will help create a cleaner, more professional, and motivated police machinery in Nagpur. “By identifying problem areas early and addressing them systematically, the department hopes to improve response times, public trust, and overall law and order situation. The reform is seen as a continuation of proactive measures taken by Patil since assuming charge,” said a police source. The commissioner is monitoring the compilation of the defaulter lists to ensure fairness and effectiveness. Cops across the city are taking note of the clear message — improve performance and conduct, or face consequences, while outstanding work will continue to be rewarded.
