Ponda: Several items including foodgrains were destroyed in a fire at a general store at Wadakade-Usgao in Ponda taluka late Saturday evening. The loss reported is estimated to be Rs 5 lakh.Subhash D Naik, the sub-officer at the Ponda central fire station who led the firemen team to douse the flames, said that fire broke out when the shop was closed.A passer-by noticed the smoke emanating from the locked shop and alerted the neighbours who informed the Ponda fire station, Naik said.“The firemen struggled for around two hours with two fire tenders spraying around 20,000 liters of water to control the fire”, the officer said.The shop owner Sunil Prabhu was at home at the time of the incident.
