Chandrapur: Durgapur police on Friday arrested Parimal Baburao Gaurkar (32), the alleged key accused in the fake degree and certificate racket busted earlier this week. Gaurkar, a resident of Tukum, had been absconding since police registered a case against him and his associate Vaibhav Bholaram Sonule.Police sub-inspector and PSO Durgapur Santosh Shegaonkar said Gaurkar was arrested from a hideout in Nagpur following a search for him. Another accomplice in the racket, Akshay Khobragade, too has been arrested from Nagpur.Sonule was arrested earlier and is in police custody.According to Shegaonkar, the universities whose purported degrees, diplomas and other academic certificates were seized during the investigation have confirmed to police that the documents were counterfeit. The seized documents allegedly bore forged seals and signatures of reputed universities.Police are now probing the racket’s financial trail and whether the forged credentials were used for jobs, admissions or promotions.
