Chennai: A 25-year-old man was arrested by the cyber crime police for posing as a lawyer and harassing a 49-year-old woman in Saligramam by demanding repayment of a loan she had never taken. The complainant stated that, on Feb 20, she received calls from a man and a woman, claiming that she had defaulted on a loan. The callers identified themselves as lawyers and that they were calling from the high court. They insisted that she settle the dues. Though she said she had availed of no loans at the time, she kept receiving calls demanding payment. Based on her complaint, the west zone cyber crime police registered a case. They then traced and arrested Saran, 25, of Alapakkam. An investigation revealed that Saran worked as a third-party loan recovery agent for a private company. He contacted individuals, including those who did not avail themselves of loans, and threatened them by posing as an advocate and claiming to call from an advocate’s office or the Madras high court. He used different names and misrepresented his identity while making calls. TNN
