Shivamogga: The crucial road link between the Malnad and coastal regions has been under severe strain following a fatal landslide at Hulikal Ghat two weeks ago. The incident occurred during construction work near a hairpin bend, claiming the lives of three labourers and prompting the Shivamogga district administration to suspend traffic along the stretch. In an attempt to restore partial connectivity, the administration introduced a temporary ‘transshipment’ bus system. However, commuters say the arrangement reflects poor planning and places an enormous physical burden on passengers.Under the stopgap system, buses from Shivamogga, Hosanagar and Thirthahalli halt at the landslide point and turn back, while buses from the coastal side operate up to a point below the Chandikadevi Temple near Balebare Falls. Passengers are forced to bridge the gap on foot. Those travelling towards Shivamogga must climb 85 steep steps near the temple to reach their connecting buses parked alongside it, while passengers heading towards the coast have to descend the sharp hairpin bends. Locals have raised serious safety concerns, pointing out that the steps lack railings and roofing, making the climb especially hazardous for the elderly, children and those carrying heavy luggage. For patients travelling to Manipal for urgent medical treatment, the ordeal is even more distressing. Chirag, an activist, accused officials of negligence, saying the disruption has forced many people to take long detours. He pointed out that patients from Yadur and Sulagodu travelling for regular dialysis are facing severe delays, often reaching hospitals hours late for their life-saving treatment.Residents have also expressed frustration that even minor roadwork frequently leads to prolonged closures without adequate safety measures or alternative arrangements. As Hulikal Ghat serves as the primary artery linking Shivamogga with the coastal belt, locals are demanding that restoration work be expedited to end the daily hardship.Responding to the criticism, Shivamogga deputy commissioner Prabhuling Kavalikatti said officials had taken protective measures along the steps and were monitoring the situation.
