Leh, September 3: Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh Vinai kumar Saxena today approved the notification for the creation of Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Councils (LAHDCs) in all seven districts of the Union Territory, paving the way for the establishment of elected local councils across Ladakh.
The decision follows the creation of five new districts—Sham, Nubra, Zanskar, Drass and Changthang—in April this year and the Centre’s subsequent decision on July 13 to extend the LAHDC system to all seven districts.
Announcing the move, the LG said the creation of councils across all districts would help decentralise and strengthen local governance and provide greater autonomy to local bodies.
“With the notification in place, the process for elections to these councils shall begin in due course,” the LG said in a post on X.
The LG described the decision as a landmark step towards fulfilling the long-standing aspirations of the people of Ladakh at the grassroots level.
The administration expressed confidence that the move would empower Ladakh and its people to play a greater role in shaping the region’s development and promote more inclusive governance.
The LG also congratulated the people of Ladakh on what he termed a “historic occasion.”
