Leh, July 31: The Ladakh Administration has declared 23 historic sites across the Union Territory as Protected Monuments, marking a significant step towards preserving the region’s rich cultural, archaeological and spiritual heritage. The decision brings several historically important sites under statutory protection, paving the way for their scientific conservation, restoration and long-term preservation.
The protected sites include ancient petroglyphs, prehistoric rock carvings, centuries-old forts, caves and iconic Gompas that have long been exposed to natural deterioration and human-induced damage. Officials said the notification provides a legal framework to safeguard these heritage assets and ensure their protection for future generations.
Lieutenant Governor Ladakh Vinai Kumar Saxena said the move is aimed at conserving Ladakh’s invaluable cultural treasures while strengthening institutional mechanisms for their maintenance and preservation. He said the statutory protection would help prevent encroachments, regulate activities around the notified monuments and facilitate systematic conservation and restoration of the sites.
The LG said the initiative reflects the administration’s commitment to preserving Ladakh’s unique civilisational heritage alongside its developmental aspirations. He added that the effort is guided by Prime Minister ‘s vision of “Vikas Bhi, Virasat Bhi”, which seeks to promote development while safeguarding the country’s historical and cultural legacy.
Officials believe the notification will strengthen heritage management in Ladakh, encourage responsible tourism and create greater awareness about the Union Territory’s rich historical and spiritual traditions, while ensuring that its invaluable monuments are preserved for generations to come.
