Thiruvananthapuram: A preliminary assessment found that Kerala State Electricity Board’s power distribution network sustained an estimated loss of Rs 25.43 crore in the extreme rain that lashed the state over the weekend. As of 4pm on Aug 3, rain-related damage affected KSEB’s 2,892 transformers and disrupted power supply to 6,56,770 consumers.The preliminary assessment found that 349 high-tension and 2,599 low-tension poles were damaged in the downpour. High-tension lines snapped at 248 locations, while low-tension lines fell at 7,212 locations. KSEB is yet to restore power supply to 63,676 consumers and 233 of its transformers were completely submerged.Kannur and Pathanamthitta accounted for much of the disruption. Power outages largely persist in flood-affected areas and restoration work can begin only after the water has fully receded and safety protocols can be followed, said KSEB.Repairs are under way at different parts of the state and KSEB has started circle-level control rooms to coordinate restoration work. KSEB has sought the cooperation of consumers.
