Thiruvananthapuram: The decision by the family of a 54-year-old woman, who was declared brain dead, to donate her organs has given a ray of life to five people.S Vijayakumari, a resident of Panangode, was an employee at a resort in Palode. On Feb 7 morning she was travelling on a scooter with her son K J Abhijith, when she felt dizzy and fell on the road. She was immediately taken to a private hospital in Thiruvananthapuram, where she was later declared brain dead. Her family then consented to organ donation. Despite the pain of separation, her husband Karunakaran Nair and children Abhijith and K J Krishnendu decided to proceed with the organ donation, believing that Vijayakumari would continue to live through others. Her liver, kidneys, and corneas were donated. A kidney was given to Thiruvananthapuram Medical College, while the other kidney and liver were donated to the patients of a private hospital and the corneas were given to the Regional Institute of Ophthalmology in Thiruvananthapuram. The organ donation was coordinated under the leadership of Kerala State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization.
