More than 70% of the construction work has been completed, according to Chamaraja MLA.The 100-bed hospital is a state govt project, being executed by the department of health and family welfare at a cost of Rs 123 crore. The hospital is coming up on five acres of land provided by Mysuru Medical College and Research Centre at PKTB premises on KRS Road. Chief minister Siddaramaiah had laid the foundation stone for the medical centre on Dec 22, 2023. This facility is set to be a boon for more than 11,000 cancer patients in the Mysuru region, including 6,808 females. Currently, these patients need to travel to Bengaluru’s Kidwai Institute of Oncology to avail follow-up treatment. MMCRI has also opened a cancer screening and care centre at KR Hospital. About 40 patients and other follow-up cancer patients avail radiotherapy at the facility daily. Speaking to TOI, Chamaraja MLA K Harishgowda, who oversaw the progress of the implementation of the development work of the centre, said 70% of the construction work of Kidwai’s Peripheral Cancer Centre is now complete. The govt plans to expand this centre to 350 beds in the coming years. The dean and director of Kidwai Institute of Oncology, Dr Naveen Y Bhat, said a proposal for recruitment of manpower and procurement of equipment for its Mysuru Peripheral Cancer Centre was also submitted to the state govt. Once the construction work is completed and the building is handed over to the institute, the process of recruiting staff and installation of equipment will begin, Dr Bhat said.
