Thiruvananthapuram: State human rights commission (SHRC) has directed state govt to expedite implementation of the 10 missions announced on Feb 23, 2025, to prevent wild animals from entering human settlements and curb growing incidence of human-wildlife conflict.In an order, commission chairperson Justice Alexander Thomas said govt should ensure that all solar-powered fences installed along forest boundaries adjoining inhabited areas are fully functional. It also directed chief conservator of forests (CCFs) to fast-track installation of solar fences in forest border areas where such protective barriers have not yet been erected.Directives were issued after SHRC examined a report submitted by principal chief conservator of forests (administration).According to the report, 273 grama panchayats in the state have been identified as being affected by human-wildlife conflict, with 30 of them classified as highly vulnerable. It also noted that state govt has declared human-wildlife conflict a state-specific disaster. In Wayanad, district worst affected by such incidents, an officer of the rank of CCF has been appointed as special officer to coordinate mitigation measures. Govt has also revised norms for granting financial assistance to victims of wildlife attacks.Justice Thomas observed that despite implementation of several govt initiatives, incidents of wild animals straying into populated areas and posing a threat to human life continue to be reported. He stressed the need for urgent and effective implementation of the announced measures to ensure safety of people living near forest areas.Commission issued the directives while considering a petition filed by Chembankode C Manikandan.
